Head on crash injures five people

Preliminary investigation indicates on July 21, 2013 at approximately 9:15 a.m., a 1990 Subaru Legacy four-door driven by Samuel Kitto, age 19, from Astoria, was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 8. For an unconfirmed reason, the Subaru traveled across the centerline where an approaching eastbound 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by Karen Anderson, age 27, from Eugene, took evasive action to the right. Both vehicles collided head-on near the eastbound lane fog line.

Anderson received minor injuries. Her passenger received serious injuries. Both were transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. They were using safety restraints and airbags that deployed.

Kitto received serious injuries. He was initially transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

Three passengers in the Subaru were also seriously injured. The passengers were taken directly or transferred to Portland-area hospitals.
